Gypsum is found in nature in two forms, hydrated calcium sulfate and anhydrous calcium sulfate. The predominant form in the soil is hydrous calcium sulfate and the hydrous form is rarely seen.

The strength of the hard shell of the fruit during formation depends on the availability of calcium ions.
